Tetris Didn't Succeed at This Gaming Ceremony — An Additional Classification Could Fix That
As any major prize-giving event nears, there’s always an outcry to include of new categories to recognize unsung work and fill the passions of enthusiasts dedicated to specific genres.
My colleague has already made advocating for terror-themed awards. That would rule. The same goes for board games, representing a passionate advocate's mission. However, I must insist for pushing forward just as with other blinkered fanatics, I have a cast-iron argument supporting my request stands as crucial and important of all. The demand is this: We need a classification for brain-teasing titles.
Organizing Gaming Categories
Classifying creative works isn't exact; it’s very subjective, and typically start arguments resulting in unclear classifications. It's understandable that movie academies don’t do it. However, it represents an unavoidable compromise for the industry of gaming, showing incredible range they hardly constitute a single creative category.
To recognize the complete range of gaming accomplishments to be recognized, and for games of all stripes to have a chance for representation, genre categories are essential.
Current Gaming Award Categories
Prominent interactive entertainment events currently feature award types recognizing Action, Adventure-action titles, Role-Playing, Fighting, Simulation and strategy titles, and Sports/Racing games. Between them, these award types effectively encompass many game types, and you can find room for numerous titles.
Not so for logic-based experiences. No suitable classification appears for their placement. Consider three of outstanding current releases, all very different: the architectural riddles of one title, the pulse-pounding block-matching of another game, thought-provoking social scenarios in another game. What category would fit them within current classifications? Nowhere, that’s where.
The Representation Problem
There are dozens excellent brain-teasers released every year without proper recognition at major award shows, unless they happen to qualify for categories like Mobile Game, VR/AR Game, or the intensely contested independent game categories.
- A renowned logic title wasn’t nominated in any category that year
- Another creative title missed out that year
- Popular arranging title received no acknowledgment in 2021
- Just some puzzle games barely qualified for small studio or handheld classifications
Importance of Logic Titles
Commonly they're modest productions, but the art in brain-teasers is of massive significance. Famous handheld logic titles stand as the most-played games globally and have been for many years.
The famous puzzle experience competes with famous sandbox experiences claiming status as most purchased experience; it additionally competes for top gaming experience. Brain-teasers form essential building blocks within interactive entertainment, and engaging with almost every other genre.
Recommendation and Reasoning
Puzzle games wouldn’t have this problem. One could readily select five nominees engaging, different, qualified experiences every year with ease — or rather, with difficulty, since numerous excellent numerous deserving experiences.
Restating the point, these represent titles that otherwise have no home during prominent ceremonies. Brain-teaser creators are working at the hard edge interactive creation, producing among the purest expressions of the video game form. Just like cinema stunt performers, they deserve recognition. Let’s not keep them waiting decades.
